Some Training Tips For You

  • Dogs understand the immediate – gratifying the dog with a treat “after” he has been a good bouuyyy is no good …or even moments “after” she has done the task you had asked her to do…it sticks and dogs are able to corelate action with gratification only with “immediacy” of reward – so as soon as the dog follows the command well – gratify
  • Levels of gratification – Simply put – reward should be proportional to action. So while using treats for training, you should be cognizant of the order of preference the dog has for various treats provided…so greater the accomplishment – higher should be the perceived value of the treat
  • While we would love for you to buy more and more of our treats for training your doggo, eventually while teaching the dog new commands, the dog should eventually see your excitement as a gratification of higher order than the treat. This can only happen if you are extremely real with your praise! Smile, hug, compliment the dog.
  • Training and conditioning works both ways – while treats for training help reinforce commands and good behavior, sometimes inadvertently we also end up gratifying the dog when he isn’t being a good bouuy…which also reinforces that negative behavior. E.g lets say the dog is barking when she shouldn’t and in order to get her to stop, you offer her a treat. This will reinforce the barking even more! Afterall which pooch wouldn’t want our biscuit!
